There has been substantial scientific evidence over the years promoting breast milk for newborns and the American Academy of Pediatrics promotes exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. It’s even more critical for babies born prematurely and of very low birth weight as this population is immature and fragile. With the rate of babies born preterm being approximately 12 percent in the United States, the need for breast milk is high. Currently, donor milk banks are established all over the country to provide breast milk to this vulnerable population.
