Lawyers say La Trobe University may have broken the law by suspending Roz Ward, the co-founder of anti-bullying program the Safe Schools Coalition, over a Facebook comment that called the Australian flag "racist". The move to stand down the controversial academic from her job at the university's Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society has been condemned by academics and the National Tertiary Education Union, and a petition supporting Ms Ward has already gathered more than 1000 signatures.
